It might sound pathetic at first, but nothing gets me dreaming like a strip of dirt. Especially if that dirt is newly plowed in anticipation of planting. This is the second season for our parking strip with its unobstructed southern exposure and, though it doesn't look like much now, I'm already imagining it bursting with greens and peppers and tomatoes.
So consider this the first installment in the 2010 GSNW Garden series!

Is your gardening patch in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street in your neighborhood? We're about to move into Portland (from the suburbs) and I was wondering if PDX allows one to take up the grass and do something more productive with that little strip. What do you do with it in the winter?
Yes, often called a "hell strip," you can dig up the grass and plant it. My neighbors plowed up their 100' strip and have a gorgeous garden that's the talk of the neighborhood. In winter they just sit there, or you could plant a cover crop that would feed the soil. And welcome to town!
It looks promising. Personally I think it will be an interesting read to follow this dreamscape from "the ground up" ;)

be careful.. there was a story in the sellwood bee and oregonian last year about the garden strips.. apparently they're ok unless one of your neighbors complain (not likely to happen in sellwood )

yay! i'm picturing big fat tall sunflowers with beans growing up them ala three sisters, with pumpkins at the bottom to keep away the weeds...
